Last week, we started a journey into building a mailing list. This is an essential tool if you are to connect with your readers on your terms, rather than on those of the big tech media companies. We began with understanding that reflecting on our own behaviour online is always a useful starting point, this is because other people are just like us. Although the phrase, if you build it they will come, is pervasive argument in many online courses, the reality is that this is not true.
Your readers need to know you exist which is why we started to talk about the pathways you need to build that encourages people to sign up to a mailing list in the first place. This week, we’ll take our own experience of signing up (or not) and think about what will encourage someone to take a chance on someone they don’t know.
